Raising Muslim Children in the Western World

If you’re a Muslim living in the west, you probably have valid worries about bringing your kids up in western culture, and those worries are well known to everyone. This is a developing issue in Muslim nations that have been and continue to be colonised by western culture. Ultimately, as parents our primary goal is to protect and prepare our kids for the afterlife.

Here are some of the obstacles that your child may face in the western society:

  • Not being around people who understand or know about Islam.
  • Being singled out based on looks, dress (such as the hijab) and language.
  • Being around haraam things that are considered normal in western culture such as pre marital relationships, and unlawful things within Islam.
  • Wanting to make friends and fit in but not knowing how to connect if not by the above.

There are many more obstacles that children will face on the daily basis, and the following factors should be instilled for their upbringing:

  • Nurturing your Children with Islamic values and Islamic Education

Nurturing children with Islamic principles and education is an important element of Muslim parenting. It promotes spiritual well-being, identity formation, and character development. To do this, parents should set a good example by introducing the concept of Tawhid, teaching the Quran and Hadith, and encouraging frequent prayer. Enrolling children in Islamic schools, establishing a home library of Islamic literature, and participating in community activities are all crucial first steps. Addressing children’s concerns requires open communication. To help children grow into spiritually grounded, ethical adults who can negotiate the problems of the modern world while keeping their Islamic identity, this journey demands effort, love, and patience.

  • Showcasing our Islamic History and achievements

Islamic history contains a wealth of accomplishments that have shaped the world’s knowledge, art, culture, and civilisation. Science, mathematics, and astronomy made great advances throughout the Islamic Golden Age, while Islamic art and architecture continue to enthral with their beauty and inventiveness. Literature and scholarship maintained and improved knowledge, and Islamic contributions to world culture range from trade to gastronomy to many other areas. The heritage of Islamic dynasties such as Cordoba and Baghdad exemplifies the spirit of cooperation and intellectual interchange. By highlighting these outstanding achievements, we honour our heritage and motivate future generations to carry on the legacy of excellence that defines the history of the Islamic world.

  • Taking them to the mosque and learning Qu’ran

Taking youngsters to the mosque and facilitating their Quranic instruction are important practises for developing their faith and Islamic identity. Mosques provide a spiritual haven for children where they can connect with Allah, form bonds with the Muslim community, and learn from faithful role models. Early exposure to the Quran, including memorization and accurate recitation, instils a strong respect for the sacred text. As children grow, it is critical to encourage them to understand the meaning of Quranic texts. Regular mosque visits, Quranic classes, and family Quran time all contribute to a comprehensive approach to developing their faith, ultimately providing them with a solid foundation in Islam that will lead them throughout their lives.

  • Spending time with kids

Spending quality time with children is not only essential for their development but also aligns with Islamic teachings. The Hadith encourages parents to engage in activities like horse riding, archery, swimming, and wrestling with their children. These activities promote physical fitness, discipline, focus, and important life skills while creating opportunities for bonding. Teaching children these skills not only strengthens the parent-child relationship but also instils values of excellence, resilience, and sportsmanship in line with Islamic principles. Being with your child is crucial, especially when you are ‘present’ with them. This helps us create closeness and the ability to communicate easily.
